Counselling
At Claire House, we can offer counselling services to the children and young adults we support, as well as their family members.
Our counselling service:
- Gives people the opportunity to talk in confidence and in a private setting about any issues which may be concerning them or their family.
- Allows individuals to share thoughts and feelings with someone they can trust. Enables individuals to explore and understand themselves their worries or concerns differently. Our counsellors will work alongside individuals to consider different ways to enhance wellbeing and facilitate positive change in their life.
- Provides support in individual sessions or within a group setting.
Our Counsellors are all BACP registered, meaning they meet the high standards set by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and use:
- Talking therapies to discuss thoughts, feelings and behaviours which can be held in a variety of locations involving walk and talk (counselling outdoors)
- Techniques like hypnotherapy, mindfulness, visualisation and grounding to help manage responses trauma.
- Rewind sessions – helping people to manage trauma related responses, such as flashbacks, unhelpful thoughts or panic attacks
- Cognitive techniques such as reframing, to help someone think about a situation differently and consider a different perspective
- Creative methods – such as incorporating music, art and sand play into therapeutic sessions to support the exploration of difficult thoughts and feelings
- Group counselling

Who is the counselling service for?
The service is available to any child or young adult under the care of Claire House. For some children, counselling therapy may not be appropriate so the team will work with you to consider all therapeutic options available to the child.
This support extends to family members such as parents, guardians, brothers and sisters and grandparents.
Where does it take place?
Counselling can be assessed at our Wirral hospice or second site in West Derby, Liverpool.
If supporting a sibling, sessions can also take place at the child’s school if necessary.
Our trained Counsellors can also talk to you in a safe and secure online platform for anyone who prefers to be at home.
We also offer outdoor therapy, which combines talking therapy with movement in an outside environment.
The Counselling Team work closely with the Care and Rapid Response Teams and provide specialist bereavement care to those families who require more support.
fAMILY events
Family members may also benefit from getting together with other families and we therefore organise vents and workshops for parents, siblings and families throughout the year.
Parents can meet up and enjoy perhaps a pamper day, meal out, activities such as golf, archery and football, or complimentary therapy sessions.
Every year, we hold Memory Day to remember all those children and young adults who have been supported by Claire House but have sadly passed away. We also host our Light for Love event, which takes place towards Christmas and offers an evening of light entertainment and activities for all families to enjoy..
How can I find out more?
Events and workshops for parents and siblings are listed in our quarterly What’s On guide, which is available via email. To receive a copy, please ensure we have an up-to-date email address and that you choose to receive information.
